The first couple weeks I tried this, it felt stressful trying to relax on Wednesday. For example, when I returned from the winter break, I found myself not using my Sunsama. I often arrive at work, and just start putting out fires, rapid responding, and going for the short dopamine fix of answering every Zoom, text, email, and human in my office (open door policy). I finally looked up in the afternoon and acknowledged that it happened. It's comfort.<br> <br><strong>🎙<em> Ashutosh's response:<br></em></strong>I’m just like you. I want to answer my emails, be responsive to customers and colleagues, and stay on top of all those little work chores almost to a fault. This tendency to want to do short-term, urgent, quick-hitting work is the number one thing that stops me from putting my energy and attention towards important and challenging long-term work.<br><br>I don’t know if this is an old habit as much as a natural predisposition we have as humans and I’m not a scientist but <a href="#" style="text-decoration:underline; color:#555555">the research</a> seems to back up our basic intuition here: When a task feels urgent, we’re more likely to pick to work on it, even if it has an objectively worse long-term payoff.<br><br>The fun thing about being human is we can become aware of our inner psychological workings and then choose to act differently. Here’s how I tackle this problem:<br>I set aside time every day for low-value, high-urgency work. I give my monkey brain the morning part of my workday to enjoy the payoffs of answering emails, reviewing things for colleagues, and checking off little tasks. Mid-day, I take a break to meditate and reset and then delve into my long-term work.
